The client for this South San Francisco home was undecided—stay, or relocate and convert the property into an Airbnb. What was clear: the backyard was a dirt-filled space with exposed trenches and needed to be finished. The design cues were already there. A blush pink exterior and terracotta-tiled entry inspired a “pretty in pink” Mediterranean concept. To anchor the yard, we unified the two patio doors with a generous landing, pairing terracotta treads with pale pink geometric tile risers for a subtle focal moment. To keep costs low, we preserved the existing brick terraces and complemented them with gravel and prefabricated 2x4 concrete pavers. A small lounge area sits beneath a sail cloth for shade, while a full sun area accommodates a raised vegetable bed. Perimeter fences are softened with lush yet low-water plantings that elevate the entire space. Pink is echoed throughout the garden in flowering plants and select furnishings, reinforcing the palette with a subtle, cohesive thread.
