In collaboration with the homeowners, we created a modern desert oasis in San Francisco inspired by a shared love of the graphic patterns and low water plants of Mexico City. Bright poured-in-place concrete pavers weave through black basalt gravel. Sculptural butia, agaves, and cacti are softened by feathery acacia and shrubby helichrysum. Existing pottery is thoughtfully placed throughout the garden as focal points. Concrete benches frame the entry to a gravel courtyard, where breeze blocks provide a graphic backdrop for the rest of the garden.
An entry gate offers a glimpse of a centrally placed Butia capitata, with acacias, agaves, pottery, and a gravel courtyard beyond.
