Homeowners in Orinda sought design guidance for a shady corner of their property. They were drawn to the movement and lightness of ornamental grasses, but achieving that effect in low light required a nuanced approach. We selected shade-tolerant species—lomandra, festuca, nepeta, pittosporum, and stachys—to evoke a similar texture and softness in partial shade. A custom fence was also designed to frame canyon views while maintaining privacy along a shared property line. The result is relaxed, informal, and distinctly Californian.
In this Orinda shade garden, lomandra, pittosporum, hydrangea, and rosemary create layered texture and nuanced green tones.

In Their Words
"As a couple with a strong perspective on landscape aesthetic but no sense of how to accomplish it, Christel was the perfect partner. The way she shared multiple options, heard and built on our feedback, collaborated with us each step of the way, and worked with our contractor bring the plan to life -- it was all ideal. Plus, there's the beautiful final product that we couldn't have gotten without her. Can't recommend her more highly!"
